General Director of MDB ‘ISKRA’ named after I.I.Kartukov, Doctor of Engineering Science

Director General of JSC `MDB ISKRA` Vladimir Alekseevich Sorokin:

I welcome all visitors to `MDB ISKRA` site. Our company is well-known both in Russia and abroad. Solid-fuel engines produced by `ISKRA` equip Russian tactical and aircraft missiles, and I can safe say that all of them begin their flight with an ignition spark, with the start of the engine, with "ISKRA".

Our aim is to preserve and increase the experience we gained, the scientific and technological potential, to make our perspective product samples highly competitive on the XXI century world arms market.

Our motto is reliability and safety.

JSC ‘MDB ‘ISKRA’ named after I.I.Kartukov ’ is one of the leading producers of solid fuelled rocket motors. The factory was established in 1946 as a State Union Factory on the basis of the experimental design bureau which was engaged in developing aviation weaponry. The experimental design bureau, established in 1937, was headed by chief designer I.I.Kartukov and by the time the plant was started it had already acquired knowledge and experience in the development of military equipment in rather complex prewar and war conditions.

The postwar development of military equipment, new developments in military and space spheres considerably extended the field of application of solid fuelled motors.

The factory developed boosters for the launch of non-piloted and piloted aircrafts and antitailspin rockets. These developments guaranteed the testing of the whole family of Mig, Tu, Il, Su, Yak aircrafts.

Booster and sustainer engines, developed by ‘ISKRA’ equip rockets of various types: ‘air-to-air’, air-to-surface’, surface-to-surface’.

High reliability and a quick response of solid fuel propulsion systems allow them to be successfully used in aviation and space emergency facilities.

They are: ISKRA combined firing mechanisms of aviation and helicopter ejection seats, ejection seats for ‘Vostok’ and ‘Buran’.

Solid fuelled propulsion systems of emergency recovery of the crew of ‘Soyuz’ spacecrafts of various modifications are also widely known.

Soft landing engines, developed by the factory are used in landing systems of spacecrafts (‘Vostok’, ‘Soyuz’) as well as during the airlift delivery.

ISKRA’s specific line of work is the development and production of solid fuelled gas generators, which are applied in various technical fields: from the deployment of missile components to the emergency ventilation of the main ballast tanks of submarines.

Since the enterprise was established more than 200 solid fuelled motors for air defense, tactical, aviation, naval and space missile systems and complexes of Chief designers V.N.Yangel, S.P.Korolev, P.D.Grushin, V.N.Chelomey, V.N.Bugaysky, I.I.Toropov, M.R.Bisnovat, A.Y.Breznyak and others have been developed and produced.

In 2002 the enterprise became Joint-Stock Company ‘Machine building Design Bureau ‘ISKRA’ named after Ivan Ivanovich Kartukov’ and was merged in Joint-Stock Company ‘Tactical Missiles’ Corporation.

MDB ‘ISKRA’ incorporates a design bureau, experimental production and testing facilities which allow carrying out full-scale design work, testing and production of engines and gas generators on solid fuel.
